Archive 2017 – Industry, sports and toys

The 2017 trade fair year shows a clear thematic focus on digitalisation in industry, sustainability in sports and outdoor activities, and technological innovations in the consumer and toy markets. Leading events such as Hannover Messe, ISPO, OutDoor, Inhorgenta Munich and Spielwarenmesse illustrate this breadth.

Industry 4.0 and networked production

Networked manufacturing was the focus of Hannover Messe. Automation systems, connectors and network components, security software for IoT applications and industrial 3D printing document the transition to the smart factory. Industry 4.0 became operationally tangible in 2017: data integration, machine communication and digital process chains dominated the scene. Ergonomic assistance systems such as the Chairless Chair also show that efficiency and working conditions were considered together.

Sport, outdoor and sustainable materials

ISPO and OutDoor reflect the shift towards functional and resource-saving products. Recyclable outdoor clothing, membrane technologies, avalanche transceivers, trail running shoes and mountain and trekking shoes illustrate the technical orientation of the industry. At the same time, the digital complement to classic sports equipment increased:

  • Smartwatches and sports-related wearables
  • Electric skateboard kits
  • Stand-up paddle boards
  • Water filter and outdoor sleeping systems
Performance and sustainability were not presented as opposites, but as combined quality features.

Jewellery, design and watches

Inhorgenta Munich 2017 highlighted the tension between traditional craftsmanship and technological advancement. Floral jewellery collections, zirconia jewellery, designs made of wood or glass, and smartwatch models are examples of this combination. Interviews with presenters, designers and Messe München officials complement the product perspective with economic analysis.

Living, energy and security

Heim+Handwerk focused on burglary protection, pellet heating systems, roller shutter systems and garden pools. Energy efficiency, security and sustainable heating technology gained in importance. At the same time, creative concepts such as upcycled lamps and innovative lighting solutions made of wood showed that design and function are increasingly merging.

Toys between technology and tradition

The 2017 Toy Fair documented a clear focus on technology. Programmable construction kits, augmented reality applications, self-balancing scooters and remote-controlled high-end models were displayed alongside classic board games, model trains and wooden toys. The ToyAward in various age categories illustrates the breadth of innovation – from baby products to concepts for teenagers and adults.

The 2017 archive thus reflects a year in which industry, sport and toys were equally influenced by digitalisation and technological integration. The entries allow us to classify the market impulses of the time and show how strongly sustainable materials, networked systems and programmable products had already established themselves.
