Lamps made of sandstone, so finely crafted that they are translucent - LumberLight is showcasing this unusual lighting concept at Heim+Handwerk 2022 in Munich. The lamps combine natural material with precision craftsmanship and create a special lighting atmosphere in the room.
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains near Dresden serve as the region of origin for the sandstone used. The material is carefully selected and processed in such a way that its natural structure is retained. Sandstone is considered a robust natural material, but is used here in a way that one would not expect at first glance. At the trade fair, it becomes clear that the stone does not appear as a solid block, but as a fine, translucent element. The materiality remains perceptible without appearing heavy or dominant.
The lampshade consists of a layer of sandstone that is only around two to three millimeters thick. This thin material thickness is crucial for allowing light to shine through the stone. At Heim+Handwerk, you can see how evenly and softly the light passes through the stone. Many visitors only realize that it is real stone when they take a closer look. The surface looks delicate, almost textile, and refracts the light in a calm, warm way.
The range includes various types of lights, including floor, wall and pendant lights. Despite the different shapes, the design line remains clearly recognizable. The sandstone always takes center stage and shapes the effect of the luminaire in the room. The lamps are less suitable for functional lighting than for atmospheric accents. They come into their own where light is intended to create atmosphere.
LumberLight originally began with lamps made of certified wood. The range was later expanded to include sandstone. To make the stone durable, it is preserved and coated so that it neither crumbles nor greys. The design is done by hand. Machines do not play a central role in the shaping process; instead, the lamps are created step by step by hand. Each lamp is therefore unique.
Another aspect is the conscious use of resources. Natural materials are used that are obtained sparingly and sustainably. At Heim und Handwerk, it is emphasized that there is no other manufacturer in Germany that uses sandstone in this form for lamps. The lamps therefore not only stand for a special design, but also for an alternative approach to materials that goes beyond industrial standards.
