Simply extend the table top of a dining table without having to clear it first - and even leave glasses standing? At Heim+Handwerk in Munich, we took a look at the infinitely extendable table from LAIK and found out how a simple idea was turned into a functional piece of furniture.
The table originated around 18 years ago. Tobias Jung explains at the trade fair that the basic idea came about while playing with a meter stick. From this observation, a concept developed step by step, which is now presented as a fully developed piece of furniture. From the very beginning, the focus was on the question of how a table can be flexibly enlarged without the need for individual inserts or the table having to be laboriously rebuilt. The result is a mechanism that remains invisible at first glance.
The length of the table can be adjusted by simply lifting and pulling it. It can be extended from two to three meters, without fixed locking points or steps. The transition is seamless and the desired length can be freely selected. A special feature is that the table can also be extended when set. Glasses, cups and crockery remain in place while the table surface is extended. How smoothly this process works will be demonstrated at the trade fair.
Despite the movable design, the table remains stable. When fully extended, it is strong enough to sit on. This stability is a key criterion for the furniture's suitability for everyday use. The construction is designed to ensure that mobility does not affect stability. At Heim und Handwerk, it is clear that function and stability have been deliberately combined here.
The table is made from laminated birch plywood. The material is laser-cut into a special pattern that is crucial for the extension function. This process is patented and shapes both the function and the appearance of the table top. Production takes place in a joinery in Fürstenfeldbruck. The materials used come from Bavaria and Germany. This means that the entire value creation remains regionally anchored.
The table is available in four different sizes. There is also a choice of six color variants and a natural birch model. The leg shape - round or square - and the color of the table legs can also be determined individually. The configuration is done online so that the table can be adapted to your own ideas before ordering. At the trade fair, it becomes clear that individualization is an integral part of the concept here.
