Designer furniture in bold colors, made from solid wood and combined with textile covers: Hammer Objects focuses on individuality, craftsmanship and sustainability. At Heim+Handwerk 2022 in Munich, we met designer and carpenter Christoph Hammer and talked about his handmade furniture.
A key feature of the furniture is the deliberate use of solid wood. The surfaces are stained so that the natural wood structure remains visible. The color does not cover the material, but highlights the grain and depth. This creates the characteristic impression that distinguishes the furniture from industrially manufactured pieces. One particular eye-catcher on the stand at Heim und Handwerk is a signal red chest of drawers. Despite the intense color, the wood remains recognizable, which gives the furniture a special tension between materiality and color.
Christoph Hammer deliberately does not work with standardized series. The pieces of furniture can be adapted in many ways - from the dimensions to the choice of color to the number of drawers or elements. This results in pieces that are tailored to specific living situations. The target group is deliberately kept open. The colorful designs appeal to different age groups and set specific accents in living spaces without committing to a particular style.
New at the trade fair are benches and chairs in which wood and textiles play together in equal measure. A velvet fabric made of 100 percent cotton, which is washable, was specifically chosen for the upholstery. The search for materials was complex, as sustainability and suitability for everyday use had to be equally fulfilled. Wood and fabric can be color-coordinated so that each piece of furniture forms a clear design unit. Christoph Hammer needs around two to two and a half days of pure working time to produce a bench.
All pieces of furniture are individually handcrafted. The visible traces of work and the individual design are no coincidence, but part of the concept. Each piece is allowed to show its origins and is therefore slightly different from other works. This attitude also characterizes the further development of the collection. New ideas are constantly being developed, including for writing and dining tables as well as other chair models, which will be added to the range in the future.
