Interview with Helmut Schgeiner from VDMA Miningbauma: Planning for machinery and digital construction sites
When huge cranes, dump trucks, asphalt plants and construction machinery from all over the world are set up at bauma in Munich, the result is immediately visible to visitors. For the organisers, however, the work begins long before that. Interview with bauma Project Manager Mareile KästnerSensor technology and safety control systems for mobile construction machinery

Ground stiffness analysed in real timeThe world's leading trade fair for the construction, construction machinery and mining industry takes place every three years at Messe München. From April 11 to 17, 2016, 1,263 national and 2160 international companies from 58 countries presented their latest products to 580,000 visitors from 200 nations on a record 605,000 square meters of exhibition space. The event is the only trade fair in the world that offers a complete overview of the construction machinery industry. bauma is open to the public.
Due to the early booking-out of exhibition stands, an online industry catalog was introduced for the first time in 2016. Companies that could no longer be considered for placement were listed online on request in corresponding categories such as construction machinery, construction vehicles, construction equipment and mining machinery. Messe München also offered them the opportunity to arrange meetings with customers in a lounge set up especially for this purpose at the trade fair. This meant that even those who "arrived too late" were able to have face-to-face discussions with their decision-makers and target groups from industry and trade, service providers from the construction industry and building materials industry and from the procurement sector.
At first glance, gigantic machines dominated the exhibition halls, while the booms of 40 cranes reached for the sky on the open-air site. The largest Liebherr dump truck on display, with 2700 HP, could have accommodated 13 cars on its loading area. But the trade fair portfolio also included small, no less important construction aids such as surface scanners for detecting cracks on conveyor belts or raw material extraction and processing as well as building material production. To help visitors find their way through the wealth of innovations, an app was available to call up interactive hall plans and exhibitor lists and plan the event program.
In addition to in-depth, interesting insights into the offerings of various exhibitors, which can be seen in the trade fair videos, our Messe.TV team was able to conduct informative interviews. Ms. Mareile Kästner, Project Manager of bauma 2016, sees the preparation from bauma to bauma over 3 years as a long-distance run. She knows how important it is for exhibitors to receive the layout plans the summer before the start of the trade fair and to be able to make their detailed plans accordingly. Not only the large machines, but also the component sector at bauma is constantly growing. Networking on construction sites is also becoming increasingly important.
The VDMA is one of the main providers of ideas for bauma and also the central industry association for mechanical engineering. In an interview, the Technical Director of VDMA Mining, Mr. Helmut Schgeiner, expressed his confidence that the industry will pick up again and tackle new topics despite the slump on the raw materials market and a lack of investment. He sees Industry 4.0 and the use of data as a key topic at bauma 2016. Mining machinery took up a large area at bauma 2016. Dr. Martin Wedig from the Foreign Mining and International Raw Materials Activities Association spoke to us about problems on the raw materials market and what solution strategies the FAB has in store. He points out that a raw materials project starts with environmental protection and that mining is a long-term project everywhere.
bauma 2016 was all about gigantic machines, innovative technologies, and international business relationships. The trade fair in Munich impressively demonstrated the role that efficiency, digitalization, and sustainable construction site solutions play in the construction and mining industries.
In addition to spectacular large machines—such as cranes, dumpers, and tunnel boring machines—numerous exhibitors also presented more compact solutions for efficient workflows. Digitalization was not just a buzzword, but was evident in smart sensor technology, automated control technology, and networked planning.
With over 3,400 exhibitors, bauma 2016 offered an impressive variety of industries – from tool and machine manufacturing to tunnel boring and underground infrastructure. Companies presented innovations to meet the increasing demands for precision, performance, and environmental friendliness.
The organizers of bauma not only had the enormous space under control, but also the logistical and strategic planning. With over 580,000 visitors, an app-supported hall overview, and a lounge concept for exhibitors who were placed too late, the event was managed efficiently. Interviews revealed how much lead time and strategic foresight goes into such an industry event.
