The bauma was first held in 1954. Back then, it was organized as the “Construction Machinery Exhibition” on the Theresienhöhe grounds in Munich and had a rather regional character. The goal was to promote the post-war economic recovery and to provide a platform for the domestic construction industry.
By the 1960s, the fair had already become a permanent fixture in the German industrial calendar. With its relocation to Munich-Riem in 1967 and later to the new Munich-Riem exhibition center (today: Messe München), a phase of dynamic growth began. In the 2000s, the event expanded internationally with offshoots in China (bauma China), India (bauma CONEXPO India), and South Africa (bauma CONEXPO Africa).
From just a few hundred exhibitors in its early years, bauma evolved into a trade fair with around 3,700 exhibitors from more than 60 countries by 2019. Visitor numbers climbed from about 8,000 in the 1950s to over 620,000 in the record year 2019. This impressive development underlines the global relevance of bauma.
