Volvo Construction Equipment is presenting a fully electric version of the well-known A30 articulated dumper for the first time at the trade fair. The machine is technically based on the diesel model, but has been completely converted to a battery-electric drive. Volvo is thus sending out a signal for greater climate compatibility in construction site operations.
The basic principle of the machine remains the same: The drive train and transmission are the same as the conventional design. Only the diesel engine has been replaced by five battery modules, which are housed under the hood of the tractor unit. Two electric motors take over the drive, which is now completely emission-free locally. This is not a grid-connected machine, but a fully autonomous system with charging requirements between uses.
The electric motors installed are not identical, but each perform different functions - a differentiation that serves to improve performance. The interaction with the familiar transmission enables driving dynamics that largely correspond to the diesel version. Even under load, there should be no fundamental differences, as Volvo emphasizes.
The cab has also been redesigned in parallel with the change in drive system. It corresponds to the latest generation in the dump truck segment and will be used in both electric and diesel-powered variants in future.
The focus is on improved visibility to the front, left and right - an improvement compared to the previous G-series in particular. The concept is complemented by new displays, more functions, ergonomically adapted controls and suspended pedals that make it easier to clean the floor.
The standard equipment includes a camera on the left-hand side of the cab. As an option, the system can be expanded to include front and rear cameras, whose images can be displayed simultaneously. The simultaneous display of all viewing angles is particularly helpful when maneuvering in confusing terrain and improves general operational safety.
Deliveries of the A30 Electric are scheduled to start next year. At the start, Volvo is concentrating on selected markets and customer groups. The technology is to be extended to other models and regions in the future. The aim is to systematically integrate the electric range into the existing portfolio.
