Cab-free construction machinery from Hidromek: remote control for greater safety

With the "Teleopera" prototype series, Hidromek shows how heavy construction machinery can be controlled remotely in the future - without a cab. The prototype was specially developed for use in hazardous locations where the protection of personnel is a top priority. The machine is controlled remotely, while cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence provide a comprehensive picture of the construction site.

Control without cab: machine operation from a safe distance

The decision to dispense with the cab was deliberate: Instead of a physical driver's seat, the operator sits in a separate control room - potentially anywhere in the world. This is made possible by a stable internet connection. Two monitors, joysticks and a headset are available there. This means that the machine can be fully controlled, including feedback via radio.

The usual operation via an iPad would not be sufficient here - a specialized technical infrastructure is required for precise control. This means that the person who would normally be in the driver's cab can work from home and take on high-risk tasks without putting themselves in danger.

Worldwide application possibilities thanks to Internet connection and satellite technology

A central element of Teleopera technology is its location-independent operability. As long as there is an internet connection, the machine can be controlled remotely - even over long distances. Especially in combination with satellite-based services such as Starlink, this opens up new application scenarios, for example in remote regions, on large construction sites with limited infrastructure or for short-term emergency operations. The machines are therefore not only safer, but also more flexible to use than conventional models with cabs.

Intelligent environment detection with 360-degree cameras and external sensors

Integrated cameras and radar systems on the machine as well as external sensors placed on the construction site - for example on tripods - provide an overview. These provide additional viewing angles and significantly improve the overall view. This gives the operator a complete picture of the surroundings, including potential sources of danger.

The 360-degree camera is particularly helpful as it provides a seamless view and reacts in real time. Sensors automatically detect obstacles or unusual movements and can issue corresponding warning signals. By combining several perspectives, the machine operator remains informed at all times, even though he is not physically present.

Artificial intelligence supports autonomous working

In addition to remote control, automation is also playing an increasingly important role. AI-supported systems evaluate sensor data, detect objects, analyze movement patterns and help to automate certain processes. The aim is to allow machines to work independently as far as possible - with simultaneous monitoring by the operator. With the further development of these technologies, the need for personnel on construction sites will also change: Fewer and fewer people will need to be directly on site, while the importance of technical assistance systems will increase.

Remote control with radio and direct feedback to the driver

The machine operator - who is located in a remote control room - receives all relevant information via a headset. Communication takes place via radio so that changes on the construction site can be responded to immediately. At the same time, he monitors the machine functions via screens and sensor displays. The control system reacts in real time, ensuring precise and safe operation. This principle makes it possible to work efficiently even under difficult conditions without exposing personnel to unnecessary risks.

Large-scale overview thanks to additional camera positions

In addition to the machine's own cameras, the system uses additional external cameras that are set up around the area of use. These provide a rough but comprehensive overview, similar to a surveillance system. The information from these cameras flows together with the sensor data, giving the operator a complete overview - even of areas that would not be visible to the machine itself. This reduces the risk of collisions, improves the planning of work processes and increases safety on the entire construction site.
