Primal Hatch Megalodon brings Jurassic World to life

by J. Groh - 2026-02-21

When Spin Master introduced Primal Hatch under the Jurassic World label last year, it wasn't just about a new character. It was about an experience. An egg that appears to open itself. A dinosaur that breaks out.

A moment that amazes children. The concept was awarded Toy of the Year – and now comes the next level of escalation: Primal Hatch Megalodon.

Primal Hatch Megalodon: When the egg becomes the ocean

Instead of focusing on a dinosaur again, the action shifts to the sea. The Megalodon, one of the most famous prehistoric sharks, becomes the star of a staged hatching moment. The dramaturgy is deliberately constructed. First, the egg is opened. Then the shark is ‘fed’ – a tin of sardines is included in the set. Next, two litres of water are poured into the tank, with a mark indicating the correct level. As the water level rises, the atmosphere changes: sounds begin, movement occurs, the water starts to foam. The animal's eyes light up. The impression is clear: something is awakening here. The principle of ‘chumming’ – stirring up water to lure a shark to the surface – is playfully simulated. The egg becomes the stage, the water the effect. When the Megalodon finally breaks through, the moment is staged like a film scene.

Interactive Megalodon with biting function and four games

After hatching, the shark transforms into a fully-fledged play figure. At 16 inches long, it is twice as big as it was in the egg. A touch sensor triggers biting movements, and a trigger sensor in the mouth reacts when you reach inside. Various modes can be activated via an integrated button. Four games are integrated. This means that the experience does not end after the hatching moment, but continues into active play. The Megalodon reacts, snaps and challenges. It's not just about the effect, but about interaction. A key feature is the reset function. At the touch of a button, the shark can be reset, reassembled and placed back into the egg. Pour in water – and the spectacular moment begins all over again. The product thrives on repetition and staging.

Spin Master: Inspiration from Jurassic Park

The idea behind Primal Hatch is inspired by an iconic film scene: the hatching of a raptor in Jurassic Park. This moment of wonder was to be experienced as a toy. Spin Master took the motif further – first with dinosaurs, now with a prehistoric sea monster. Sharks are one of the strongest themes in the boys' segment. Combined with prehistoric creatures, the result is a combination of excitement, fascination and a touch of horror. The Megalodon appears larger, wilder and more unpredictable. The churning water emphasises this effect. Primal stands for the original, the untamed.

Hybrid action figures with a water surprise

In addition to the large Megalodon, there are smaller products on the shelf. These hybrid action figures cost £15 and also work with water. An injection creates a moment of surprise. Which figure is inside remains unclear until it is opened. The collectability principle is part of the concept. The smaller models also rely on the explosive reveal moment. Water is not just a gimmick, but a central element. It enhances the effect and creates a clear connection to the main line.

Experience instead of just a figure

Primal Hatch Megalodon shows how toys are increasingly seen as an event. The focus is not on the static figure, but on the moment it appears. Water, sounds, light, movement – everything works towards this moment. Spin Master is consistently developing the award-winning concept further. From dinosaurs to sharks, from land to sea. The basic idea remains the same: children should not simply take a monster out of the packaging, but ‘bring it to life’ themselves. Primal Hatch Megalodon truly brings Jurassic World to life – not as a film reference, but as a repeatable, staged play experience that combines excitement, surprise and interaction.
