Small plush figures with a clear idea and well thought-out concept have established themselves as an independent segment in the toy market in recent years.
With Palm Pals and Spudsters, Aurora shows how simple shapes, collectable characters and a consistent brand world can be combined. Both product lines deliberately focus on emotionality, recognisability and a low entry threshold - both in terms of price and design. While Palm Pals focuses on palm-sized figures with personality, Spudsters takes a playful approach with humorous, potato-shaped characters. What both concepts have in common is a clear focus on collectability and identification.
Palm Pals was launched in 2021 and has expanded rapidly since then. The starting point was compact plush figures measuring around 13 centimetres. The idea behind them is simple: figures that fit in one hand and therefore appear immediately tangible. The range now comprises more than 300 characters. Each figure has its own name and individual personality. This is complemented by background stories that can be accessed online and further reinforce the collection concept. The range has been expanded beyond the original size. In addition to the classic 13-centimetre figures, there are now other variants:
Parallel to Palm Pals, Aurora has developed a second line, Spudsters, which deliberately pursues a different design approach. Instead of classic animal or fantasy figures, the focus here is on round, potato-like shapes. The idea takes up the term ‘couch potatoes’ and translates it into a product concept. The figures are deliberately intended to appear cosy and have a relaxed, almost lazy look. At the same time, this creates a clear visual distinction from classic soft toys. A key element is the categorisation of the figures using the so-called Spud-O-Meter. Each figure is given a characterisation that ranges from active to relaxed. Examples of this are different characteristics such as cheerful, calm or rather reserved. A QR code takes users to a personality test that assigns them a suitable character. This means that the collection is not only visually charged, but also in terms of content.
The Spudsters range is now also extensive. The range currently comprises over 100 different designs, which are regularly expanded. New variants are added every year, supplemented by seasonal editions. Typical releases are orientated towards occasions throughout the year:
Both Palm Pals and Spudsters follow a clear principle: continuous expansion with a consistent design. New figures appear regularly without changing the basic concept. This creates a growing collection that remains attractive to buyers in the long term. The decisive factor here is the combination of three factors:
The result is two different but clearly structured product worlds: Palm Pals as compact, versatile collectible figures and Spudsters as a humorous interpretation of cosiness. Both lines show how strongly even simple plush concepts can be differentiated through clear ideas and consistent further development.
