Schaeffler presents EMR4 electric axle at IAA MOBILITY

Schaeffler presented the fourth generation of its electric drive axle at IAA MOBILITY in Munich. The EMR4 combines an electric motor and reduction gear in a compact unit and sets new standards in terms of performance, efficiency, and noise behavior. With this technology, the supplier is providing solutions for the growing demand for electric drives in the automotive industry.

EMR4: Electric motor and gearbox in a compact design

The designation EMR4 stands for “Electric Motor Reducer” in the fourth generation. Schaeffler has combined the electric motor and reduction gear in one installation space, creating a particularly compact system. Despite its small dimensions, the axle achieves an output of up to 160 kilowatts. This allows powerful vehicles to be developed without requiring additional space in the powertrain.

Quiet operation for greater driving comfort

A key feature of the EMR4 is its optimized noise behavior. The drive axle operates so quietly that driving noises are barely perceptible. For the driver, this means a significantly higher level of comfort, as the electric drive remains almost inaudible. Its particularly smooth running is considered a decisive advantage over other systems.

High efficiency for longer ranges

In addition to its compactness and smooth running, the EMR4 impresses with its high efficiency. This allows for either smaller batteries, which reduce the cost of the vehicle, or longer ranges of up to 700 kilometers. Schaeffler is thus responding to the key requirements of electromobility: affordable vehicles and practical ranges.

Use in the Kia EV3 and awards

The EMR4 has already arrived on the market. Among other things, it is used in the Kia EV3, which has recently become a common sight on German roads. The model has received international awards, including the “Golden Steering Wheel” in Germany. In addition to the vehicle design, the characteristics of the drive system—compact design, quiet operation, and high efficiency—are decisive factors for its success.

Trends: Hybridization and further development of electric axles

The automotive industry is currently moving in two directions: on the one hand, the combination of combustion engines with electric motors in hybrid concepts, and on the other hand, the continuous improvement of purely electric axles. Schaeffler plays a central role in both trends with the EMR4. The aim is to further increase efficiency, reduce installation space, and use raw materials in a more targeted manner.

Reduction of rare earths and scalability

A major issue for future generations is the reduction of the use of rare earths, which originate predominantly from China. Schaeffler is working to reduce this dependency and develop more sustainable solutions. At the same time, the scalability of the drives is being expanded: in the future, customers will receive even more customized solutions that are precisely tailored to their requirements.
