Clarios presented new battery developments at the trade fair that reflect the changes in the automotive industry. In addition to classic solutions such as 12-volt lead-acid batteries, the company presented lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries with integrated electronics for greater safety and functionality. This clearly shows how much the role of the battery in vehicles is changing.
While conventional 12-volt batteries were previously primarily responsible for starting the engine, batteries will take on a different function in the future. They will become a safety-relevant component that supplies the energy needed to bring a vehicle to a reliable stop in critical situations. Clarios compares the new role to a fire extinguisher: hardly active during normal operation, but indispensable in an emergency.
One of Clarios' highlights is a lithium-ion battery with built-in electronics. It automatically checks its condition at every start and presents itself as functional and safe to use. The software and electronics developed for this purpose come from Clarios and are manufactured in Germany. This approach not only makes batteries more powerful, but also increases operational safety in modern vehicle architectures.
Clarios has particularly emphasized its work on sodium-ion batteries. This technology is based on salt and can be produced entirely in Europe – without dependence on Asian raw materials. Together with its partner company Altris, Clarios is developing cells that can be used in both compact designs for installation under the seat and in larger versions. Two prototypes were shown at the trade fair. Sodium-ion technology offers a wide range of advantages: it is considered sustainable because its production consumes less water and energy. In addition, the cells are “zero-volt capable” – they can be completely discharged without damage and can be recharged at any time. This robustness clearly distinguishes them from other battery types.
In addition to the cells, Clarios also presented its battery management systems (BMS). These electronic components monitor the battery's state of charge and health and are crucial for vehicles with electric brakes, steering, and autonomous functions. Clarios offers solutions for 12- and 48-volt systems, which are of central importance for future vehicle generations.
The company covers various chemistries, including LFP and NMC, and operates its own cell manufacturing facility in the US. This makes Clarios one of the few suppliers that produces 12-volt cells locally and exports them worldwide—including to China. With its investment in sodium-ion batteries, the company is pursuing a strategy that combines sustainability, security of supply, and technological innovation.
