For many people, the idea of a shady retreat in their own garden is closely linked to holiday memories. This is exactly where Urban Bamboo comes in.

The company offers handmade bamboo pavilions, which originally come from the architecture of Southeast Asian beach and temple complexes. In Europe, these structures are increasingly being used as unusual garden architecture – both in private gardens and in tourist facilities or wellness areas. The construction is based on traditional models from Thailand. There, so-called ‘sala’ – open bamboo pavilions – have been part of the landscape for centuries. They stand on beaches, in front of temples or in hotel complexes and serve as a shady place to rest. Urban Bambus brings this concept to a European garden environment.

Urban bamboo pavilion from Thailand as a natural product

The structures are traditionally handcrafted in Thailand. Bamboo and palm leaves are used, ensuring that each element remains a natural product. The roof construction in particular differs significantly from classic pavilions made of metal or plastic. The roof covering consists of real palm leaves. These have several functional properties at the same time: they are waterproof, allow air to circulate and at the same time offer protection from direct sunlight. This creates a pleasantly cool microclimate inside the pavilion. Another advantage is its behaviour in windy conditions. While solid roof surfaces offer a target for the wind, air can circulate through the palm leaves. This puts significantly less pressure on the structure. Maintenance is also manageable. The bamboo elements only need to be treated with oil occasionally. Further maintenance is usually not necessary, even if the pavilion is left outdoors all year round.

Bamboo sala as a classic garden pavilion

One of the best-known models is the so-called bamboo sala. In Thailand, this term refers to an open pavilion with a lying area. The construction is strongly based on this traditional model. The lying area usually measures about two by two metres and offers enough space for mattresses, cushions or curtains. This creates a secluded relaxation area that creates a completely different atmosphere in the garden than classic patio furniture. The structure follows a simple principle: four load-bearing bamboo supports, a roof made of palm leaves and a spacious platform underneath. Many users additionally equip this area with mattresses, fabric panels or decorative elements. The most important features of the bamboo sala can be summarised as follows:

  • Large reclining area measuring approximately two by two metres
  • Handcrafted bamboo construction
  • Roof made of real palm leaves
  • Pleasant climate thanks to air circulation
  • Individual design with curtains and mattresses
The pavilion is often used as a relaxation area, especially in summer. The natural shade keeps the interior significantly cooler than open seating areas in the garden.

Kombi Sala by Urban Bambus as a seating area and lounger

In addition to the classic sala, Urban Bambus also offers variants that combine several functions. One example is the so-called Kombi Sala. This model initially features an integrated seating area. A table is located in the centre of the structure. When this is removed and replaced with a platform, the seating area is transformed into a large lounging area. The system thus combines two types of use:

  • Seating area for conversations and shared meals
  • Lounging area for relaxation or rest
It is precisely this flexibility that makes the structure interesting for many garden owners. It can be used both as a meeting place for guests and as a place of retreat.

Bamboo pavilion for garden whirlpool and lounge

In addition to the classic sala models, there are also open pavilion variants. They consist solely of four load-bearing bamboo posts and a roof. The interior can be freely designed. Many owners use this structure as a canopy for, for example:

  • Whirlpools or jacuzzis
  • Outdoor lounges
  • Seating areas on the terrace
  • Shaded areas in large gardens
The pavilions are available in various sizes. Typical variants range from approximately two metres to three metres in length. This allows them to be adapted relatively flexibly to different properties.

Tiki bars and bamboo bars as an addition

In addition to pavilions and loungers, bamboo bars are also part of the range. These are visually inspired by tropical beach bars and are often used as an addition to garden pavilions. There are two basic variants. The smaller mini bar functions as a counter where guests can stand. The larger bamboo bar offers more work space and is also suitable for events or larger garden parties. Such structures are not only used by private customers. Amusement parks, spas and hotels are also increasingly turning to bamboo architecture to create a relaxed atmosphere.

Urban bamboo between garden architecture and holiday ideas

Most customers are homeowners who consciously design their gardens as living spaces. A bamboo pavilion is perceived less as a piece of furniture and more as a place in its own right. Many users describe precisely this effect: when you enter the pavilion, you experience a different atmosphere than on the terrace or in the living room. The structure is reminiscent of holiday settings – beach bars, hotel complexes or temple gardens. Urban Bambus usually delivers the structures fully assembled or takes care of assembly and installation itself. An assembly team usually needs around three hours for this, as many elements are already prepared in the warehouse. According to the supplier, entry-level prices start at around £3,300 for a basic model without additional equipment. Curtains, mattresses, roller blinds or seat cushions can increase the price. This positions Urban Bambus between garden furniture manufacturers and suppliers of small architectural structures. The pavilion becomes a secluded retreat – a place to sit, lie down or relax, bringing the atmosphere of Southeast Asian holiday resorts into your own garden.
